M finished up all the Harry Potter books in May (she really liked them...even the long ones), so we have been watching all of the movies. B particularly has liked the movies, even if they are a bit scary.
M & S both went to the eye doctor in June. M’s eyes have only changed a little, so she doesn’t need to get new glasses yet. S’s right eye is now nearsighted, but her left eye is fine, so the doctor doesn’t recommend that she get glasses. I guess kids her age who see well enough, just don’t wear the glasses. S was a little disappointed that she wasn’t getting glasses.
For the Young Women’s camp fundraiser, we detailed cars. On a couple Saturdays the Young Women and leaders cleaned some really dirty cars.
S finally learned how to ride a bike in June. I have been working with her every summer for years and it’s been rough. Perhaps it just took the right motivator. She says that using the bike trailer helped.
The girls took several classes in June and it kept us quite busy. M took tennis, and volunteered at the library. S & B took tennis, swimming lessons, and gymnastics. Also, M & S are continuing with piano lessons, but with a new teacher (one closer to home).
In addition to all their lessons, Principal K enrolled M & S in the Pryor Academy. They didn’t have a choice. They do daily assignments in Language Arts, Math, Music, and PE. Assignments are made mostly by the principal and supervised by their teacher, Mrs. T. The girls are not really happy with the arrangement, but are getting used to it. Neither girl performed as we wanted them to last school year, so we are trying to give them a little practice over the summer. B has been doing a workbook (that she loves) and we have been working on her holding her pencil correctly.
M’s shower was finally fixed the first week of June and M is thrilled to have her bathroom back. We are glad to have her out of our bathroom. Work on finishing the basement started the end of June. We spent a solid 8 hours on a Saturday in June moving stuff out of the basement. It was quite a project. We stuffed everything in places throughout the house, as well as K’s side of the garage. Our basement is really coming along. The walls are all up and the bathroom is being tiled. The doors and closet on the playroom have been started as well (B will be moving in). It has been fun to watch it take shape.
We spent the last week of June and into July in Arizona at T's family reunion. It was nice being able to see my parents, all of my siblings and their families, as well as my grandparents and Aunt & Uncle and cousins. We swam at the pool, played games, went to Rockin R Ranch, and hiked Usery Pass. It was really hot, usually around 110 degrees each day. On July 3rd we flew to Texas and spent July 4th with K’s extended family in Mount Vernon. We got to see his Granny, lots of aunts and uncles, and some cousins. K’s dad was even there visiting. That evening we flew home.
S turned 10 on July 12th. For her birthday she really wanted to go ice skating. We took her friend and M skated as well. They did quite well considering they didn’t know how to ice skate. B and I watched. Afterwards she requested we go to Steak N Shake. At S’s check up she was 54 pounds (6th percentile) and 4 feet 5 inches tall (34th percentile).
M attended a Stake youth water activity and packed meals at Feed My Starving Children for mutual one night. M & B attended Safety Town for a week. M was a volunteer teen leader. B learned all about safety - personal, fire, electrical, animal, etc. - while exploring a miniature town on a little bike. They both had a good time.
M & I went to Girls Camp in Wisconsin the last week of July. I stayed all week as a leader. There were a couple other leaders that came for a day or two throughout the week. We had 9 girls attend, 3 as junior staffers. We stayed in cabins, ate quite well, attended workshops and devotionals, did crafts, hiked, and had a fun time. It was pretty warm and sticky the first part of the week, but cooled off and was beautiful. The girls in our ward are great and had a really good time. I survived being there 6 months pregnant. I carried around my water, snacks, and stool.
While we were at Girls Camp, K took S and B to Washington to visit Grandpa & Grandma. They swam in the hot tub, played with Sebastian (the dog), played with cousins, went crabbing, went fishing, and went hiking.
